The Mensa IQ Requirement

Mensa is the world's oldest and largest high-IQ society, founded in England in 1946. Membership is open to anyone who scores in the top 2% of the population on a standardised intelligence test. In practice, this means an IQ score of approximately 130 or above on a test with a standard deviation of 15 (such as the Wechsler or Stanford-Binet scales), or 148+ on a test with a standard deviation of 24 (such as the Cattell Culture Fair test).

The exact score required depends on which test you take, because different tests use different scoring scales.

Mensa Qualifying Scores by Test

Mensa accepts evidence from a wide range of supervised psychometric tests. Here are the qualifying scores for the most common assessments:

Online IQ tests โ€” including free platforms like Quizvo โ€” are not accepted for Mensa membership. Mensa requires tests administered under supervised conditions to ensure validity.

How to Apply for Mensa

There are two routes to Mensa membership:

  1. Prior evidence โ€” if you already have documented results from a qualifying test (e.g., a WAIS administered by a psychologist), you can submit this evidence directly to your national Mensa organisation.
  2. Take the Mensa test โ€” Mensa chapters worldwide offer supervised testing sessions, usually for a small fee. You can find upcoming test sessions on your country's Mensa website.

Mensa does not accept scores from tests taken online without supervision, including school achievement tests, SAT/ACT scores (though some national chapters accept SAT scores taken before 1994 under specific conditions), or tests administered by untrained individuals.

What Percentage of the Population Qualifies?

By definition, exactly 2% of the population qualifies for Mensa โ€” roughly 1 in 50 people. With a global population of 8 billion, that is approximately 160 million people worldwide who theoretically qualify, yet Mensa has around 145,000 members. Most people who would qualify never bother to apply.

What Is Mensa Actually Like?

Mensa is primarily a social organisation. Members attend local chapter meetings, national gatherings, and events centred around puzzles, games, and intellectual discussion. There is no formal benefit beyond the social network โ€” Mensa does not provide career services, scholarships, or professional credentials.

Many high-IQ individuals find Mensa less stimulating than expected. The organisation's value depends almost entirely on the quality and engagement of your local chapter.

Other High-IQ Societies

For those who qualify above the Mensa threshold, other societies exist with stricter entry requirements:

Can I Practice for the Mensa Test?

You can familiarise yourself with the types of questions used โ€” matrices, analogies, sequences โ€” but genuine IQ tests are not passable through cramming. What does help is ensuring you are well-rested, not stressed, and have practised the format of the questions so test anxiety does not suppress your performance below your true level. Taking free IQ tests like ours is a reasonable way to gauge your approximate level before committing to a formal assessment.
