The honest answer: some are, most aren't. The internet is flooded with "IQ tests" that inflate scores to make users feel good (because flattery drives sharing), use too few questions to measure anything reliably, or test general knowledge rather than cognitive ability. Knowing the difference between a legitimate cognitive assessment and an engagement-bait quiz is important before you invest time in โ or trust the results of โ any online test.
A well-designed IQ test should include several key characteristics:
Legitimate IQ tests measure fluid intelligence โ the ability to reason with novel information โ not just general knowledge or vocabulary. Look for:
Tests that rely heavily on vocabulary, general knowledge, or trivia are measuring crystallised intelligence and prior education โ not raw cognitive ability.
Reliable measurement requires enough items to reduce the influence of random guessing and situational factors. A 10-question test cannot reliably estimate IQ. Minimum: 30โ40 questions. Better: 50โ80 questions with a mix of cognitive domains. Tests under 20 questions should be treated as highly approximate.
Your score is only meaningful relative to a comparison population. Good tests are normed against large, representative populations. Without norming data, a raw score tells you nothing meaningful. Be skeptical of tests that don't explain how scores are calculated or what population they're normed against.
A well-designed test reports your score on the standard 100-point mean, 15-SD scale with appropriate caveats about measurement error. A test that reports everyone in the 120โ140 range regardless of performance has been designed to flatter, not measure.
Take the test when you are well-rested and mentally fresh. Cognitive performance is measurably worse after poor sleep, during illness, or at times of peak stress. Morning or whenever you feel sharpest is ideal. Avoid taking the test immediately after demanding cognitive work.
Minimise distractions. Close other browser tabs, silence notifications, and find a quiet space. Divided attention degrades performance on cognitive tasks, particularly working memory tasks.
Work steadily but without rushing. Most good tests are timed, so pacing matters โ spending too long on one question at the expense of answering others you could have gotten right is a common mistake. If you're stuck, move on and return if time permits.
Some people try to "study" for IQ tests by practising logic puzzles. This can marginally improve performance on the specific item types you practised but does not meaningfully change your underlying cognitive ability. The goal should be to get a representative measure of your current performance, not to optimise test performance through repeated practice.
Online IQ test scores are indicative, not definitive. The standard error of measurement on even well-designed cognitive tests is typically ยฑ5โ7 points โ meaning a score of 115 really means "somewhere between about 108 and 122." Take your result as a useful data point, not a precise verdict. Your score can vary between tests, between sessions, and will likely improve if you take the test again after rest.
Our IQ test uses pattern recognition, logical reasoning, and spatial tasks โ the same question types as professional assessments. Start free, get your score instantly.
