"Genius" is one of the most loosely used words in the English language. Press releases throw it at any teenager who can solve a Rubik's cube. But psychometricians have a precise number in mind. So what is a genius level IQ, really โ and how rare is it?
Most modern psychologists draw the line at IQ 140. This is the score above which classical psychology textbooks (Terman, 1916; Cox, 1926) classified individuals as "near genius" or "genius". Above 145, the term shifts to "highly gifted" or "exceptionally gifted".
That said, the word "genius" has fallen out of clinical favour. Modern classifications prefer the more rigorous "Highly Gifted" (130+), "Exceptionally Gifted" (145+) and "Profoundly Gifted" (160+) โ because intelligence research has matured beyond a single dramatic label.
Because IQ follows a normal distribution with a standard deviation of 15, you can calculate exactly how rare each threshold is:
| IQ Score | Classification | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| 130 | Highly Gifted | ~1 in 44 (top 2.3%) |
| 140 | Genius / Near Genius | ~1 in 261 (top 0.4%) |
| 145 | Exceptionally Gifted | ~1 in 741 |
| 160 | Profoundly Gifted | ~1 in 31,560 |
| 180 | Beyond reliable measurement | ~1 in 20+ million |
Estimated genius-level IQs of famous historical figures (most are retrospective approximations rather than measured scores):
This is where the romance of "genius" collides with research. Lewis Terman's century-long study of 1,500 high-IQ children found that exceptional IQ correlates with academic achievement and occupational status โ but not with extraordinary creative output, fame, or happiness. The world is full of IQ 145+ individuals living quiet, ordinary lives, and full of people in the 120โ135 range who reshape entire industries.

Not quite โ 130 is the cutoff for "highly gifted" and Mensa membership. The traditional "genius" threshold begins around 140.
About 0.38% of the population scores 140 or above โ roughly 1 in 261 people.
Not reliably. Most validated tests cap meaningful measurement around 160. Above that, scores are statistical extrapolations rather than direct measurements.
Most measured "creative geniuses" score 120+, but exceptional achievement above that point depends more on persistence, opportunity, and domain expertise than additional IQ points.
He never took a modern IQ test. Estimates of 160โ180 are inferred from his scientific output and biography, not measured directly.
