An IQ score is meaningless without context. The number 115 sounds modest until you realise it puts you ahead of 84% of the population. The complete IQ percentile chart below shows exactly how rare every score is — and where you'd actually rank.
Based on the standard normal distribution (mean 100, standard deviation 15) used by every modern IQ test:
| IQ Score | Percentile | People Above | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 160 | 99.997th | 1 in 31,560 | Profoundly Gifted |
| 150 | 99.95th | 1 in 2,330 | Genius |
| 145 | 99.86th | 1 in 741 | Exceptionally Gifted |
| 140 | 99.6th | 1 in 261 | Genius / Highly Gifted |
| 135 | 99th | 1 in 100 | Highly Gifted |
| 130 | 97.7th | 1 in 44 | Gifted (Mensa cutoff) |
| 125 | 95th | 1 in 20 | Superior |
| 120 | 91st | 1 in 11 | Superior |
| 115 | 84th | 1 in 6 | High Average |
| 110 | 75th | 1 in 4 | High Average |
| 105 | 63rd | ~1 in 3 | Average |
| 100 | 50th | 1 in 2 | Average (median) |
| 95 | 37th | — | Average |
| 90 | 25th | — | Low Average |
| 85 | 16th | — | Low Average |
| 80 | 9th | — | Borderline |
| 70 | 2nd | — | Extremely Low |
Each percentile tells you how many people you outperformed. An 84th percentile score means 84% of people scored lower than you and 16% scored higher. The percentile is a fixed mathematical property of the normal distribution — it doesn't change based on the country, year, or test (assuming the test is properly normed).
An IQ of 115 sounds only "slightly above average". But its percentile (84th) reveals it places you in the top 1 in 6 adults. Percentile rankings are how psychologists communicate score meaning to non-specialists — they translate abstract numbers into concrete population position.
Curious where you actually fall? The free IQ test at quizvo.com reports both your raw IQ and your population percentile.
Notice how rapidly the right tail thins. Going from 130 (1 in 44) to 145 (1 in 741) is roughly a 17× rarity jump for only 15 IQ points. That's the bell curve at work — extreme scores get exponentially rarer because the curve drops off sharply at the edges.
Your percentile is the percentage of people you scored higher than. A 90th percentile IQ means you outperformed 90% of test-takers in your norming group.
There's no clinical threshold for "smart". Anything above the 75th percentile (IQ ~110) is solidly above average; above the 90th (IQ ~120) is in superior range.
Approximately 135. The 99th percentile means you outperformed 99% of the population.
From the standard normal distribution. Each IQ score corresponds to an exact percentile because IQ is calibrated to follow a bell curve with mean 100 and SD 15.
Percentile is more intuitive ("I'm in the top 5%") while IQ is more precise. Both are derived from the same underlying performance — just different ways of expressing it.
