Where Do the 16 Types Come From?
The 16 personality types originate from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs in the 1940s, based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological types. The framework identifies personality along four dimensions, producing 16 possible combinations.
While the MBTI has limitations as a clinical diagnostic tool โ test-retest reliability is moderate, and the binary type assignment oversimplifies continuous traits โ it remains one of the most widely used personality frameworks in workplaces, educational settings, and personal development globally.
The 4 Dimensions
- E vs I (Extraversion vs Introversion) โ where you direct your energy: outward toward people and action, or inward toward ideas and reflection
- S vs N (Sensing vs iNtuition) โ how you take in information: through concrete facts and present reality, or through patterns, possibilities, and the big picture
- T vs F (Thinking vs Feeling) โ how you make decisions: through logical analysis and objective criteria, or through values and how decisions affect people
- J vs P (Judging vs Perceiving) โ how you organise your life: preferring structure and closure, or staying open, flexible, and spontaneous

Which Is the Rarest Personality Type?
The INFJ (The Advocate) is consistently identified as the rarest type, making up approximately 1โ2% of the population. INFJs are paradoxically both idealistic and practical โ they hold firm values while quietly working toward concrete change. Famous INFJs include Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Oprah Winfrey.
Which Is the Most Common Personality Type?
The ISTJ (The Logistician) and ISFJ (The Defender) are the most common types, each making up approximately 11โ14% of the population. Their combination of reliability, responsibility, and conscientiousness makes them the quiet foundation of most functional organisations and communities.
How Accurate Is the MBTI?
The MBTI has genuine value as a framework for self-reflection and team communication, but it has limitations as a scientific tool. Studies show that roughly 50% of people get a different result when retested just weeks later โ suggesting the binary categories oversimplify continuous personality traits. The Big Five model (OCEAN) is considered more scientifically robust and more stable over time, though it lacks the MBTI's accessibility and widespread cultural recognition.
Use personality types as a starting point for self-understanding, not a fixed identity. People are more complex than any four-letter code.
