The fastest way to understand IQ test questions is to actually try a few. Below are real-format examples in the four categories every modern test draws from โ pattern, numerical, verbal, and spatial. Try them blind, then check the answers.
Pattern items measure fluid reasoning โ your ability to spot underlying logic in novel sequences.
Q1. What number comes next? 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?
Options: A) 36 B) 40 C) 42 D) 48
Answer: C) 42 โ the differences increase by 2 each step (4, 6, 8, 10, 12).
Q2. Which letter comes next? A, C, F, J, O, ?
Options: A) S B) T C) U D) V
Answer: C) U โ gaps increase by 1 each step (skip 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, then 5).
Numerical items test working memory and abstract relationships using simple arithmetic.
Q3. If 3 workers can paint 6 walls in 8 hours, how many walls can 6 workers paint in 4 hours?
Options: A) 4 B) 6 C) 8 D) 12
Answer: B) 6 โ doubling workers and halving time keeps output equal.
Q4. Find the missing number: 3, 9, 27, 81, ?
Options: A) 162 B) 243 C) 270 D) 324
Answer: B) 243 โ each term multiplies by 3.
Verbal items measure crystallised intelligence โ vocabulary depth and verbal analogy.
Q5. "Pen" is to "writer" as "scalpel" is to:
Options: A) chef B) surgeon C) butcher D) artist
Answer: B) surgeon โ both are professional tools.
Q6. Which word does NOT belong? opaque, transparent, translucent, frosted
Answer: transparent โ the others all block or scatter light to some degree.
Spatial items measure visualisation โ mentally rotating or transforming shapes.
Q7. A cube is painted red on all six sides, then cut into 27 smaller cubes (3ร3ร3). How many small cubes have paint on exactly two faces?
Options: A) 6 B) 8 C) 12 D) 18
Answer: C) 12 โ these are the edge cubes (not corners, not centres).
Together, the four categories above sample what psychometricians call the "g-factor" โ general cognitive ability. A short test using all four (like the 25-question version at quizvo.com) can produce a properly normed IQ estimate within ยฑ5 points of a clinical assessment.
The format and difficulty are similar across tests, but specific questions differ โ and good tests rotate items to prevent memorisation.
Familiarity with question formats can add a few points by removing surprise. Repeated practice on the same items inflates score artificially without raising true ability.
Most are. Time pressure measures processing speed, which is part of overall IQ. Untimed tests measure power but lose the speed component.
It varies by individual โ your strongest cognitive domain feels easiest. Verbal-strong people breeze through analogies; spatial thinkers crush rotation problems.
20โ30 well-designed items can give a stable score. Tests under 10 questions cannot reliably estimate IQ.
The free Quizvo IQ test has 25 calibrated questions across all four categories above. Score in under 15 minutes.
