This question makes many parents anxious — either because they worry what they might find out, or because they're genuinely concerned about a child who seems unusually advanced or struggling. The short answer: IQ testing for children is most valuable when done by a qualified professional for specific reasons, not as a general curiosity exercise. Online IQ tests are not appropriate for children and should not be used to estimate child IQ.

Learning Difficulties Assessment

When a child is struggling academically despite apparent effort, IQ testing as part of a broader psychoeducational assessment can identify specific learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia) and differentiate them from general cognitive difficulty. This informs targeted educational support.

ADHD or Developmental Concerns

IQ testing is often part of a comprehensive ADHD or autism evaluation, as both conditions can produce distinctive cognitive profiles that inform diagnosis and support planning.

How to Support Your Child's Cognitive Development

Regardless of IQ scores, the factors that most reliably support children's cognitive development are:

• Reading together — the single most powerful parent-child activity for language, vocabulary, and reasoning development
• Responsive, stimulating conversation — engaging children's questions, reasoning out loud, discussing ideas
• Play-based learning — puzzles, construction toys, games, and creative play are cognitively rich activities
