While IQ tests are the most reliable way to measure intelligence, decades of psychological research have identified a number of behavioural traits and tendencies that correlate with above-average cognitive ability. None of these are definitive proof of a high IQ โ but if several resonate, you may be performing above average without realising it.
Research consistently links intellectual curiosity โ the drive to explore ideas for their own sake โ with higher IQ scores. A landmark study in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science found that curiosity was as strong a predictor of academic achievement as IQ itself. High-IQ individuals tend to ask "why?" relentlessly, find joy in learning things outside their immediate field, and feel genuinely uncomfortable not understanding something.
Counterintuitively, research suggests that people with higher verbal IQ scores tend to experience more anxiety and worry more than lower-IQ individuals. The theory: greater cognitive capacity allows you to simulate more potential negative outcomes, leading to more rumination. A 2015 study found that high verbal intelligence correlated with both higher white matter integrity (a marker of brain efficiency) and higher levels of worry.
Multiple studies have found a modest but consistent correlation between higher IQ and a preference for staying up late. Evolutionary psychologists suggest that late-night wakefulness is a relatively novel behaviour โ and intelligent individuals may be better at adopting evolutionarily novel patterns. The correlation is modest, so don't mistake insomnia for genius.
Self-directed speech โ talking to yourself out loud โ has been linked to higher cognitive function. Psychologists believe it helps organise thought, sustain attention, and work through complex problems. High-IQ individuals are more likely to use this strategy deliberately when solving difficult tasks.
Higher intelligence correlates with a greater tolerance for uncertainty and complexity. Low tolerance for ambiguity drives people toward simple, black-and-white explanations. Intellectually gifted individuals tend to sit with unresolved questions longer, update their beliefs more readily when presented with new evidence, and resist the urge to oversimplify.
Humor requires rapid integration of incongruous information โ detecting an unexpected connection and resolving it in a way that triggers surprise. Research has consistently found that the ability to produce genuinely funny humour correlates with both verbal and abstract intelligence. Comedians, on average, score significantly higher on IQ tests than the general population.
Working memory โ the ability to hold and manipulate information in the mind simultaneously โ is one of the most tightly correlated cognitive traits with IQ. If you can keep multiple variables in mind at once, remember complex instructions without writing them down, and rarely lose your train of thought mid-sentence, your working memory is likely strong.
Early reading ability is one of the strongest childhood predictors of adult IQ. Children who read early tend to have larger vocabularies, stronger verbal reasoning, and better working memory throughout their lives. Whether reading causes intelligence or intelligence causes early reading is debated โ most researchers believe it is bidirectional.
People with higher IQ tend to be more aware of the gaps in their own knowledge โ a phenomenon related to the Dunning-Kruger effect's upper end. While low-ability individuals overestimate their competence, high-ability individuals tend to underestimate it. This calibrated self-awareness can look like low confidence but is actually a sign of intellectual honesty.
Cognitive flexibility โ the ability to rapidly update your mental model of a situation and adjust your behaviour โ is closely tied to fluid intelligence. High-IQ individuals tend to pick up new skills faster, navigate unfamiliar systems with less friction, and recover from mistakes more efficiently because they update their internal models in real time.
